Cheng's UEM electric generators will enable engines to operate at their preferred mechanical speed without being tied to electrical frequency output. This requires no modification to the engine. The UEM may be run at greater than synchronous speed for a significant increase in electric power output. For example, running at 60 Hz mechanical speed while producing 50 Hz electricity will result in a 20% power gain over conventional synchronous generators. The engines can also be operated at their optimal speed for peak efficiency and lowest emissions while generating power at any line frequency.
