Cheng Receives Patent on Clean Low NOx

Cheng Power Systems, a power technology company, has been granted a patent for its unique steam injection system for the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO). These two by-products associated with power generation are major contributors to ground level ozone. Steam injection for gas turbines has been available for many years, but Dr. Dah Yu Cheng and his research team have focused their efforts over the past 3 years on perfecting the process, and the results of those efforts are dramatic.

Classic steam injection techniques inject steam into a gas turbine to lower the combustion temperature, thereby lowering the amount of NOx created as a result of combusting fuel in the engine. But the inconsistencies of this approach impeded the combustion process, resulting in incomplete combustion, and unacceptably high CO levels. The typical limit for NOx reduction from this older steam injection process is about 25 PPM. The Cheng Clean Low NOx system (CLN) uses a highly homogeneous mixture of fuel and steam injected through specially designed fuel nozzles resulting in not only NOx and CO levels near 5 PPM, but also increased power output from the gas turbine due to the additional mass flow through the engine.

“The pressures on power generators to reduce the NOx and CO levels from their power plants continues to intensify, and perfectly good but older model gas turbines that were headed for extinction are now able to provide clean, cost effective energy through the use of our CLN technology,” observed Dr. Cheng, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer. According to Bill Colston, President and CEO, “We have developed the one and only emissions control technology that not only provides the owner with a means to meet the rigorous standards of the Clean Air Act, but also the ability to recover the investment in an emissions reduction system through better fuel efficiency and higher power output. Cheng Power’s design philosophy is to simplify gas turbine technology where possible, and the CLN system simplifies the NOx and CO abatement process for a fraction of the cost of other emission control systems.”

Cheng Power Systems provides patented steam injection technology for power boost and NOx and CO controls for gas fired turbines and boilers. Over 100 installations around the world have accumulated over 2 million operating hours using Cheng technology. The company address is 480 San Antonio Rd., Suite 100, Mountain View, CA. 94040.
